Subject: Promise IDE controller- good boost?
OS: Win 98/2000Pro
CPU/Ram: 450mh/1.4G soon
Comment:

Wondered the consensus on how much improvement I'll see with the addition of a Promise controller on my older (1999) Dell.
PCI is 33mhz. FSB is 100mhz. Current CPU is P3 450. Will this controller be able to boost the speed of my drives noticably? I have to say that I don't understand just how a card can provide more oomph than the mobo it's hooked to? I want to do this & add Powerleap 1.4Ghz to this machine.

If your current HDDs are ATA 33 or ATA 66, the controller will allow you to use 7200 RPM ATA 100 or ATA 133 HDDs.

It will be quite noticeable!

I would upgrade the system before worrying about a RAID array.

IDE RAID instructions are executed by your CPU, and with a 450 MHz system, you really can't afford to lose CPU cycles, especially if you're gaming, etc.
