Subject: Programs not finding cd/dvd drives
OS: XP home
CPU/Ram: XP 2800+/1024 DDR400
Comment:

I just recently built a new computer using the DVD drive and CD-RW drive from my old computer. I have an Athlon 2800+ with 1024 megs of DDR400. Its all connected to a GA-7N400-L1 motherboard. Now my cd/dvd drives will recognize and install a program properly. But, mainly with games because they need the cd to run, it will fail to start and give me the error "Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application". I've tried a few different CD drives with this computer and thye all do the same thing. Also when I try to play a cd in winamp 3 it freezes as if it can't find the cd drives correctly. I've also tried different ribbon cables to no avail. Any ideas? Please respond or email me. Thank you.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling the programs that are giving you problems.

Do you see any conflicts in device manager? Have you tried reinstalling windows(last resort)? Is the BIOS detecting the drives correctly? Each time you restart?

I would guess it is either a problem with your Windows installation or your IDE channel. A $30 pci IDE controller card will help you troubleshoot. If it works with the card, you might want to return the faulty mobo or just live with it and use the card.

One comment, when you bootup your system. Do you see your DVD drives and CDRW drives displayed properly in the BIOS screen? Thus...

Award BIOS

CPU = Athlon 2800+ @ 2.08Ghz

RAM = 1024MB Ok
Clock = 400Mhz

Primary Master.......IBM Hard Drive
Secondary Master......None

Primary Slave........Toshiba DVD 23A4
Secondary Slave......Sony CDRW 21C98

Perhaps something like this? I'm not sure if you have a IBM hard drive, Toshiba DVD or Sony CDRW. But do you see something like this when you bootup ur machine?

Both drives are being properly recognized and I've tried placing them on both of the ide channels.

No conflicts are being shown in the device manager.

I've tried reinstalling and reformating.

The bios recognizes them everytime.

Reinstalling programs does not help.

I'll try getting a pci IDE controller card tomorrow, see how that works.

And if it helps here are the specific drives, tho i have confirmed with another computer that they are indeed fully functional:
master: Samsung DVD-ROM SD-608
slave: Sony CD-RW CRX210E1
They are currently both on the secondary IDE channel. Again thanks for any help you can provide.
