Comment:

Hi all,

I upgraded my board's processor from 166MMX to 233MMX. They both have the same bus speed, 66, and are socket 7's. The manufaturer (Gateway) uses the same bios for the 233 as the 166 (OOAES054). Any reason why the BIOS isn't showing 233? It is still showing 166, and I tried flashing but that didn't change anything.

PS it is a G-Man/Lawman mobo.

Thanks!

I just fixed it!

It was the jumpers...I guess they set them low at the factory for 166.

Really? Why would they set the jumpers for a 166 processor when they put a 166 processor in there. They should have set the jumpers for a 266 processor knowing that you would install such a processor in the future. Oh, wait, then the 166 processor wouldn't have worked.

I suspect that this MOBO has jumpers for frequency and multiplier. For a 166MHz CPU and a frequency of 66MHz, the multiplier would be 2.5x. For a 233MHz CPU, the multiplier would be 3.5x.

I believe on some of those socket 7 boards, you set the jumper for 1.5, and the 233 sees it as 3.5

That's correct. Actually, if you have an old socket 7 board that has jumper settings for 1.5x, 2.0x, 2.5x....5.0x, you'll find that the settings for 1.5x & 3.5x are the same.

Jumpers, eh? You've got a pretty old board there! My Abit-7 board has soft-controlled multis, and it's from 1996!

Yes it is an old board. My computer's mfg date (on the rear sticker) is 10/14/1997. Still looks like the day it came out of the factory, no scratches, dings, nada. It is an ivory Gateway 2000 desktop (not tower; everybody calls towers "desktops" these days--they're not...there's a difference!) Its fun to realize that a 10-year old computer like mine is still relevant. Take very good care of your computer and it will serve you well.

PS I was quite shocked to learn that when the jumper was set for 2.5, it read as 166, but when I changed it to 1.5 it went to 233? Wouldn't it be the other way around?

Aww, Brenda - well, we can't all be the seasoned pro you obviously are, running those 'strong' computers ; )

Yah - I'm happy you got it straightened out on your own (and speedily too)
