Hello, I am trying to upgrade an old PC I found in my garage and I am on a fixed budget. I am trying to get my PC to the recommended specifications of Team Fortress 2. I need a new processor and I am trying to get a cheap 3 GHz one the only problem is I am not all that great with computer hardware but I can understand basics. I am wondering whether if I get a new processor for my computer will it change the type of RAM used, because the computer currently uses SDRAM and the processors I have been looking at say things like "memory supported: DDR2." Please if you could answer my question and tell me where I can get a very cheap processor at it would be VERY appreciated!
Thanks, Daniel
The computer is a Dell Optiplex GX240 Series
Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service pack 2
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.70GHz Model 1, Stepping 2* Maximum Memory Capacity: 1024MB
Team Fortress 2 Specs.
Recommended: Pentium 4 processor (3.0GHz, or better), 1GB RAM, DirectX® 9 level Graphics Card, Windows® Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

from my experience the gx240 motherboard will only take cpus of socket 478 format with a 400mhz fsb, which means the max is about 2.4ghz (not sure exactly), above that the cpus have fsb of 533mhz and then above that they are 800mhz fsb.
Also I recall the ram in those is the 168pin SDram (the type before DDR and well before DDR2)

I really doubt it's going to take a 3 gig processor:

The ram needed will depend on the motherboard. DDR and SDRAM are not interchangeable--the slots are different. Some motherboards have slots for both but I don't know if yours is that way.
There'll be a service tag sticker on the case somewhere. You can go to dell's site:
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...
and enter it there for info about your system. Or post it back here and we can look it up.

There are 3.0/400 P4s out there, but they are extremely expensive and hard to come by. And at 3.0GHz, the 400MHz FSB would be such a bottleneck that it wouldn't perform close to a 3GHz/800 P4. Most of the 3.0/400s were sold with adapters to Socket 423 users.
The 2.4/400s are quite cheap & would give a nice performance boost over the Willamette 1.7 that is currently installed.
This ain't ur momma's P3 system:
PIII-S @ 1.66GHz
2GB PC2700
AGP HD3650
Blu-Ray drive
Homebuilt 1920x1200 projector, Pixelworks HDMI controller
JBL receiver & speakers
