Hi all
I was just reading the thread about heat and had some questions.
1. I have a comp that is running a celeron 2.6ghz processor and it was running at 44c I went outside for 5 minutes tops and I came back in and there was a burnt smell in the air and the computer was off. I tried restarting it but it did nothing so I tested the power supply and it was dead. So I swaped them and it started up like normal. But it was still running at 44c idle(comp still had no OS). I am retunning the chip and mobo because of fears of damage from power supply failure.
When I installed the chip I put on a thin layer of thermal grease like normal but still the heat. The manual said that its not to go over 38c and it was running at 44c.
I'm getting a new cpu and am wondering what can I do to prevent this problem I was using the bios to tell temp.
I also was useing a PC CHIPS M-955G PM800 mobo and a powermax case with one fan on side window.cpu was using heatsink and fan that came with it.
Thanks all sorry for being lengthy
Brian

The smell was your PSU. I got that smell when the fan went on a PSU. I changed the fan and the PSU is still going!

I bet your MOBO and CPU are OK.

Dude,

The 44'C idle temp of your CPU is NOT! what killed your PSU. Secondly you claimed the manual said that its not to go over 38'C and it was running at 44'C, there are few variable that come in to play regarding CPU temp that the manual will not cover.

BTW what manual are we talking about, Dells, motherboard or the CPU's.
