Hi,
Should the bus speed of your prosseser relate to your ram speed??
IE:I have a P3 700, the bus speed is 100 mhz, But my ram is PC133 should i get PC100, Or alternativly get a bigger processer with a 133mhz Bus speed??? or arnt they related??
Thanks guys and gurls.

These days you have to match three components to optimize your system. FSB of the CPU, Ram and mainboard.
For example: you can have a mainboard that supports 133 FSB. To do so you also have to have a CPU and RAM that support 133mhz.
Your system has 100mhz FSB. PC133 will default down to PC100. So in your case going to PC100 ram is a waste of money.
This does not mean you could put in 266mhz ram since 266 does not go down to 100mhz.

266 is PC133. The fastest certified ram is DDR 3200, which is the equivelent of what would be PC 200, were there such a thing. The confusion comes in because memory speeds are referred to by both the memory clock (PC133) and the FSB (front side bus). PC133 = 266amd or 533 Intel. Hope that explanation isn't too confusing.

So how can ram be pc100/133 and pc133 be 266?
I disagree with you OtheHill. "266 is PC133" is incorrect. It is 133mhz fsb but it is not pc133 but pc2100
See here: http://home.cfl.rr.com/bjp/Pc133.htm
You will note 133 is downward compatable to 100. No mention of 266 downward to 133 or 100. For sure if osyoiy installs 266mhz his system WILL NOT WORK.
Perhaps we are talking apples and oranges. See here concerning DDR SDRAM
http://home.cfl.rr.com/bjp/Ddrsdram.htm

PC133 is Sdram, PC2100 is DDR. There is no such thing as 266 ram. The PC 133 runs on an AMD memory bus at 266(2 x 133) and on a Pentium bus at 533(4 x 133). PC 100 Sdram = PC1600, PC 133 Sdram = PC2100 ddr. PC 2700 runs at 166MHz, hence on a AMD system 333FSB Pentium has no equvelent FSB. PC3200 runs at 200MHz, hancee on a AMD system 400FSB(2 x 200), on a Pentium system 800FSB(4 x 200). Check it out.

Like I said I think we are talking apples and oranges. The 266 is 266mhz and your are right I am talking ddr not sdram.
Nothing supports your statement that pc133 [sdram]has a 266mhz rating which is double indicating ddr ram not sdram.
but besides all, concerning the original post, that you would agree there would be no benefit to ozyoiy downgrading his ram to pc100?

Wanderer, You are right. I have my head elsewhere today. My son just blew the headgasket on his car for the second time in a year and I have responded to two or three threads concerning ddr and this same issue(double or quad pumped bus)
With his system i beleive the only option he has is to run the memory at 100. There would be no advantage to buying PC100.

Bummer about the head gasket. My son is 16 and just got his license. And hit a parking lot pole :-( $800 damage for grazing the lite pole with the bumper. Bet he will double check his depth perception next time :-)
