Problems with USB mouse attached to laptop

Specs: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, 2.1 GHz / 4024 MB
I am having problems with the mouse on my laptop. It doesn't do many tasks that it is supposed to and when I try to open mouse via the control panel it fails. Please help..

Are you talking about the touchpad on your laptop? It may be in need of repair. In the meantime, have you tried a wireless mouse?

Yeah, the touchpad works but it wont do the alternate functions like scrolling on a page using the far right side of it and it used to enlarge or shrink the page by moving two fingers towards eachother or away. I have been using a usb mouse that works fine but I think it's the usb mouse that messed up the touchpad. Now that I try to go into the mouse settings it wont even open.
