I don’t use DVDs in my laptops DVD drive to often. But just recently I went to play a DVD and every time I would try and play it it would freeze my computer. The DVD program would stop responding and would totally freeze me. Anyway I tried a few different players including, Direct DVD V4.0, Abit Sluro DVD (a version of winDVD 4), and power DVD. All with the same or similar results.
After a while I wanted to do a few different things including ripping DVDs which didn’t produce the expected result but returned a heap of errors. So I formatted and started with a fresh install of windows (xp pro)
And alas the same problems. Although DVDs seem to play ok now… although I am having problems with animatrix. (The player refusing to play certain chapters… the disk is not faulty and is in perfect condition… plays on my ps2)
And finally after trying a few other things. I tried coping the files off one of my playstation 2 games (DVD rom)… enter the matrix… (I have done this once before .. so I could view the movies before finishing the games… it didn’t work this time… error message “cannot copy “filename” cannot read from the source file or disk”… the disk is in perfect condition… not a scratch…) I have tried coping files from a number of different DVD cds (including ps2 games, DVD movies and just DVD disks with files on them) all turning up the same result.
What could be wrong with the DVD drive… could something in it have failed… would it be worth sending the laptop back to city for repairs. It is still under warranty… is there anything I can try…
All suggestions welcomed.
Thanks in advanced
NicP.s. sorry about the spelling, punctuation and wording its almost 4am, I am tired and that’s the last thing on my mind

Hi there,
It sounds like it could be one of two things to me. It is either that the DVD requires a clean, you can buy a cleaning disk from any regular hi-fi shop, or the DVD drive its self is faulty, if this so and the system is still under warranty then take it back. Hope that this helps.
Paul.
