Problems upgrading ram in a Gateway

Specs: Windows Vista, Duo 1.8/ 2G 4200
Ok I have an GT5412 Gateway. It came with 2 gigs of ram. I added 2 more gigs of ram.
When i boot comp it may run several minutes then goes to blue screen with 'page fault' or 'memory management' error and quickly reboots to safe mode. In safe mode i notice it recognizes the added memory, and runs fine while in safe mode (nothing has melted ;) )

I removed the older ram and placed new ram into the first bank... it runs fine. Old ram does same thing i bank 2.
Someone mentioned upgrading the BIOS. I searched Gateway but they havent had an upgrade for BIOS.

Is there a setting causing conflict between the two banks or is my motherboard toast?

You should be running DDR2-800 (PC2-6400), max of 1GB per slot. And you should always test new RAM before putting it into service.
