I'm trying to install another 256MB memory modual into my DELL somputer(it already has one 256mb modual). The new memory is exactly the same as the old one. When I put it in however the computer won't POST. I've tryed switchign the position of the moduals, and I've try booting with just the new modual. I know It's in right and seated good. Nothing works. Does this sound like I got bad memory?

G'day,
Is the memory speed compatible with the motherboard.
What is the speed of the memory? ie PC66, PC100, etc..
What is the speed of the motherboard?
Post back.
regards,
Elric

When you say the new module is "exactly the same" do you mean the specs are the same, the new module is 256 and same speed, same brand and size, or the exact same brand, size, speed, chip density, etc. You most likely have a module with less, higher density chips on it. This results in the same total memory capacity. Your motherboard chipset may not be able to handle the higher density chips. You need to verify the answers to all the variables that I have addressed. Look at the two modules and see if they have the same amount of chips on them (the little square black things). Thats the first place to look.

First I don't know the exact model number of the computer as it is my friends, I'm jsut upgrading it for him. The memory is the same in every way except it is a different brand. From physical appearence you can't tell the two appart and the specs are identical. I'm pretty computer knowledegable and I've seen times when a computer won't reconize the memory, reconizes it wrong, gives and error, etc. But tis is weird. The computer turns on (ie i hear the fans, hard drive, etc turn on) how ever the monitor dosn't turn on. I'm asuuming it never POSTs but again I can't really tell since the monitor dosn't come on.

This behavior generally will indicate a defective module. Possible an open or a short on the module.

Dell computers are fussy about memory modules. Go to dell's website and they will list compatible memory, so will crucial. The funny thing is, some of the memory that Dell says is compatible is not real good memory. It must have something to do with the electronics on the PCB.

I bought this memory of ebay. Should I return it and get my money back? Any suggestions on how to get this to work?

I would try to get your money back. The module appears to be defective. Are their any stickers on this module? How many chips are on it?(All of them) Describe the sizes of the chips as well.

Here is the exact memory I bought

G'day,
Following up on the comments by OtheHill, there is this comment about the memory at ebay.
256MB DIMM HIGH DENSITY 168-PIN PC-133. PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM IF YOU HAVE A SYSTEM THAT CAN NOT READ A TOTAL OF 1.5 GIGABYTES OR MORE MAXIMUM MEMORY. VIRTUALLY ALL PENTIUM III BASED SYSTEMS CAN NOT TAKE STANDARD 512MB OR 256MB “HIGH DENSITY” MEMORY MODULE. IF YOU ARE UNSURE AS TO THE MEMORY CAPABILITIES OF YOUR SYSTEM CHECK OUR CONFIGURATOR OR YOUR SYSTEM MANUAL BEFORE PURCHASING THIS ITEM. $5.00 SHIPPING, PAYPAL OR MONEY ORDER.
Maybe you can check that out with your friend or at the Dell website. You might not get your money back if there is nothing wrong with the RAM.
regards,
Elric

THe Dell is a 1.5GHZ P4, with 256MB of ram. That I know. Also, I checked the dell website fro my friends computer (when I was there and knew the model #) and that is the memory that Dell says the PC can use.
