Hi all
what is going on is I'm installing windows me on my computer and when it go to format the hard drive if fails instantly and wants to quit set up. I have tried diffrent hard drives and install cds all ending the same way. when I use fdisk to partion the drive it works fine untill I run windows set up. after windows setup it corrupts the partion where fdisk wont delete it because it wants ascii sysmbles. I tried maxblast 3 but when it finds the drive it crashes. I used the ultimet boot disk cd and tested the drive and it came back good. What could be causeing this? I'm thinking a bad cpu. I have one to replace it with but it is slower.
Thanks Brian

The last thing you should be thinking of is the CPU. CPUs either work or they don't and when they don't, there is no doubt that it isn't working.

It sounds like a hard disk problem or it could also be a memory problem. Download and run the disk manufactures diagnostic disk. That will say for certain if it is the hard disk. If that checks out run a memory checker.

Tell us about the system you're trying to install WinME on. Does it have more than 512MB RAM?

bit of a long shot this.
I assume you are using Fdisk from a boot floppy.
After setting the partition using fdisk have you also used the format command to format the disc. At the command prompt type

format c:

can you use 'format' command from the CD in the same way that you use Fdisk.
I am going back to my windows 98 days where you booted from floppy then used FDISK on the floppy to partition the hard disc and then used the FORMAT command from the floppy to format the hard disc in FAT format. I think ME is similar to 98. So i'm guessing format command can be found in same place you use FDISK
