I have already tried several things to fix this problem all without a solution. The problem is happening on 2 out of about 150 computers here where I work. I have chosen the oldest computer as it has only 2 USB ports and kybd and mouse are not USB. By the way any other device such as an external floppy or external Hard Drive or CD all work perfectly. Device Manager sees the Jump Drive as well as any other device that is attached. What happens whenever I insert (any) Jump Drive into any available USB Port it is immediately recognized, the assigned drive letter is displayed and I receive the message that hardware is ready to be used. A new window opens and I can see and explore the contents of the Jump Drive. However the drive letter assigned to the Drive is not seen in “My Computer”. I can’t write in the open window and I am not able to copy any info to the drive as I cannot see the drive letter. Also if I close the window I can never see the Drive again unless I remove and re-insert the device again. Clicking on the “Safely Remove Icon” the drive letter is displayed and I can click and remove the Jump Drive.

What I have done so far. (1) I un-installed all USB entries in “Dev Man”, after a re-boot new hardware is found and all USB drivers are re-installed. (2) I ran the following script in “regedit” to show the missing device assignments…” REGEDIT4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Current ControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1". This also did not work after the required 2 re-boots. (3) I ran Diagnostics and they all pass perfectly. (4) I have run the repair utility from the OS Installation CD. We are using Norton for Anti-virus; Ad-Aware does not find anything, and our Firewall stops just about everything.

I have no more ideas and would appreciate any help from anyone who may have run into this problem. Thanks.

Are all computers running the same OS & SP? Is the jump drive formatted?

Didn't answer weather or not the flash drive you are testing with is formatted.

Have you tried different brands of flash drives, or is that not an option?

Have tried hanfulls of different flash drives, several diff manufacturers. They all have stuff on them. A formatted blank one does the same thing. All flash drives work on all other computers except the 2 in question. Any other device ie: an external USB Floppy works great on both computers.

Looked at the links. They all seem to relate to XP being unable to create a drive letter. or creating one that is already in use. I can see the Jump Drive under Disk management it is identified correctly with both a drive letter and the correct manufacturer name. I can change the drive letter and the new drive letter is immediately displayed. However the jump drive is missing from "My Computer". I am off for the weekend but will be back on Monday to take a closer look at the links. Might find something there.

I saw something about a letter seen in Disk Management but not Windows Explorer, which I assume is the same as My Computer. I will look further.

Are more drive letters in use on the 2 machines in question?

Googling for No letter for flash drive get lots of hits.

What happens if a brand new (presumably unformatted) previously unused drive is used?

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Try F5 Key.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

I've been off for a couple of weeks therefore no input from this end. I would like to thank all those who have assisted in my dilema. I still have no cure. Just to recap. 2 computers (both different manufactures) out of about 150 have this problem. Any device, except USB Jump drive, is seen and can be used correctly. (I used a camera and an external Floppy drive, these are seen correctly and work fine!) Since the device is seen in disk manager I can map it to any letter. This does not help. Formatted, not formatted, new or old devices all behave the same. Any of the devices in question work perfectly in other computers. I ran "hijack this", as was suggested by a friend, nothing. I also ran the "repair" using the XP Installation CD, no fix. It's not the end of the world but it would be nice to cure this problem.
