Problem with Sony AR series laptop

Sony / Vgn-ar190

Specs: Windows XP
So I have this Sony Vaio AR150 that a friend dropped off with some weird display issues.

I've tried unplugging and replugging all the cables, both at the back of the lcd panel and on the logicboard end.I don't think it's the LCD itself.

I've tried restoring the computer using recovery disks fresh from Sony. but I was only able to boot the computer into safe mode (which still shows the odd display issues).

Also tried updating the BIOS, but no luck there either.

So I'm thinking there's either a) something wrong w/ the hard drives (this particular laptop has two in raid mode), b) something wrong w/ the vid chip on the logic board or c) both a and b.

Here are the pictures of the problem:

Just looking for some opinions what what people think the issue might be based on the images.

I am having the same problem with my ar190g. except that the color blocks on the screen are exclamation points. This started on June 5th. Though it was a virus because the screen you are talking about also has misspelled words.
Tried to do the built in recovery but it didnt work past the restart before step 3.
Also, the computer seems to be running with no display until I restart it. I have a 3rd party warranty but its only for hardware. They are asking for a recovery disk. Sony tells me they have no recovery disk for the machine. I dont know what I am going to do when the warranty company replaces the hard drive. Sony wanted me to send them the lap top and have them re-do something for 100 bucks but its upsetting because this computer cost me 3300 bucks to beging with and when it comes back from the repair there will not even be an operating system on it.
