Problem with Mic in the System

OS: Windows2000
CPU/Ram: AMD2000+/128MB

When win2k is installed freshly the mic in the system works fine for some days may be 3-4 months then automatically the mic stops working but the speakers works fine and this problem i am facing from very long time. every time the mic stops working i have to format the system. Please let me know how i can solve this without installing win2k again.

Is your mic plugged into your onboard sound or a seperate sound card? Either way, have you checked to see if one or the other have updates drivers?

Have you checked the microphone playback AND record volume controls? Some programs will turn them down.

Yes i have tried al this but still i am facing the same problem i have a doubt on viruses is there any chance of virus causing all this?
