well I have got back into trying to solve this problem without too much success but a lot of changing of parts from one computer to another .
First off the Gigabyte GV-R955256D card that has been giving me so much trouble works ok at 4x in the K7S5A motherboard then I went ahead and put it in a new Asrock K7S41GX motherboard that is 8x , set up with XP1800+ B tbred CPU with 512mb DDR3200 memory . Loaded new install of windows Xp Pro , all the latest updates , I installed .net Framework for the catalyst drivers and firstly tried Radeon Omega 2.6.75a drivers with no luck , could only boot into safe mode with those drivers , tried the catalyst drivers from the gigabyte website 6.14.10.6546 5/3/2005 drivers and much the same thing happened . Then I happened upon disabling primary (AGP) and running it on secondary (PCI) and it worked .
But then it tells me in Direct X Diagnostic tool , The system is using the generic video driver . Please install video driver provided by the manufacturer. Direct 3D functionability not available . So where do I go from there .I took the Gigabyte GV-R955256D card out , rebooted loaded the drivers for the onboard video SIS741 then rebooted again and noticed that it now shows my Dell M770 monitor in the device manager and the SIS741 dispay adapter and in DirectX shows all features were enabled and working as should .
I havnt tried the gigabyte card GV-R955256D in my Epox 8RDA+/ xp2600+ setup yet , but when I get time I will try it too .
With the way it was running in the K7S5A M/B it was running ok at 4X but I never noticed too much about whether it was showing the monitor in the device manager , but I am sure it was showing the Gigabyte GV-R955256D as primary and secondary with the omega drivers , but I never did any tests in the directx diagnostic tool , maybe I will put it back in there too and try it .
This seems a never ending task that I am engaged on , and I am not too sure of the solution , if there is one , seems a driver thing to me , but maybe the 3D is defective at 8x but ok at 4x . I have been using a 500 PSU with +3.3v=30A +5v=50A +12v=25A so that should be big enough .
Anyway I will keep on when I have the time to get to the bottom of this , and if anyone has any ideas, would be greatful, if you need any more info just let me know [Smile]

Why are you running Omega drivers or Gigabyte? Get the latest directly from ATI

I don't have time to look at your manual, but it sounds like part of the problem is you have the BIOS settings wrong. It has to be manually configured, do NOT use defaults. Since you have a 133MHz/266FSB CPU, make sure to run your RAM at 133MHz/DDR266 even though it's PC3200. Disable any Spread Spectrum settings. Set the AGP Aperture at 128MB. Disable the onboard video. And make sure to install the latest SiS (yuck) chipset drivers.
I don't know why anyone would buy an SiS based board when there are SOOO many better choices.

Thanks for the reply jam , I have tried the latest drivers from the ATI website , I have tried about 4 sets of drivers . I have changed settings in the CMOS , and havnt got provision to change , seems it just works if you have the agp card in , and take it out and it reverts to onboard . Yes I have tried the RAM at DDR 266 and the AGP aperture at 128mb and the latest SIS drivers are installed .

Put the gigabyte GV-R955256D video card back into the Asrock K7S41GX removed the drivers and replaced with the latest 8.282.0.0 drivers from the ATI website made sure to run RAM at 133MHz/DDR266 . Disabled Spread Spectrum settings. Set the AGP Aperture at 128MB and same thing happened , would not start until I disabled primary Radeon 9550. And even though the latest ATI drivers were installed it is still giving me the message in Direct Diagnostic tool that it has generic drivers .
Where do I go from here ?
