Hi! My CD ROM tray can be opened by using the 'Eject' option from the context menu of the Drive in My Computer, but does not open if I press the eject button on the drive. Any suggestions??

Open the tray, again, manually and look inside near the front and verify that the rubber belt is not broken or slipped off the wheel track.
I've had to replace a few of those and you can do it from the front without taking apart the drive unit.
Click on this LINK and see if this solves your problem.

The belt would not be the problem if he/she can eject from the context menu.

I would suspect the contacts on the backside of the button to be dirty or worn. You acn try openning it up and cleaning the contacts... but cd roms are CHEAP these days. It may just be better to buy a new one.

I stand corrected. Blackbill is correct. I somehow missed the "eject" line. Yes, it is cheaper to buy a new one. Sigh! I need to read the treads more carefully next time. Sorry.

If you had been recording and didn't close out the session, it could be the burning program preventing the ejection. If you can eject the tray after rebooting, that would indicate 'it' to be the problem.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Thanks a lot for responding guys! Just a slight correction - I have a DVD Writer, NOT a CD - ROM drive (wouldn't make a diference anyway...)

And the problem gets weirder. I'm able to use the eject button on the drive UNTIL Windows starts (ie during the BIOS Check and stuff), after which it goes totally kaput and I have to necessarily use the context menu to open the drive. What should I do?
