Comment: This past weekend i started noticing that textures in the games i was playing seemed to be getting stretched across the screen. It was only happening every now and then, but now its gotten so bad i can't even see anything when i play. this isn't the first time that this has happened with this VC i have. the same thing happened about 1 and a half years ago. I don't know how but it ended up clearing up, and i didn't do anything to it, atleast not to my knowledge. If anyone know why this is happening or any ways to possible fix it then please help. Thank you My VC: http://img.2dehands.nl/f/normal/144...

Reply: (edit)Wow, that my friend is a very severe case of artifacts. Its most likely heat related, 9800's are notorious for being extremely hot. Are you overclocking your video-card? When is the last time you blew out the inside of your computer? If your OC'ing, revert back to stock settings. Your card may be over heating, to help cool it down turn off and unplug your computer, get a can of compressed air and clear out all the dust inside. Next, (if you don't have ATI's latest driver) download them new ones help the card run more efficient, thus produce less heat), and while your at it download Driver-Cleaner as well. Now uninstall your current drivers, reboot to safe-mode, run Driver-Cleaner's Cab Driver then run Driver-Cleaner's main program, pick ATI and proceed cleaning all leftovers. Reboot once more install the new drivers, then download a utility program called "ATI Tool" Install it then hit the button that says "scan for artifacts", let it test for any texture corruption as it stresses the card the same way a game would, just a little more intense and accurate. Make sure your case has good air flow and that all fans (especially the one on the card) are working. I you still get anoamlies, the only thing I can think of is to manually reduce the clock speed of your card with ATI Tool until you see no more. Tools you should have: ATI Tool: http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ ATI Drivers: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/... DriverCleaner: http://www.drivercleaner.net/profes... Compressed air or a leaf Blower (on low and 5ft away) Good Luck. Before eating, always take a little time to thank the food.

Reply: (edit)If you didn't have artifacts before with this same game, they are not caused by the drivers. If they were caused by drivers you likely would get artifacts in other prorgams and in Windows itself too. Faulty computer PS's are common, and they can certainly cause your video card tp produce video problems and/or damage you video card, especially if they are putting out too much voltage. Check your PS. See response 4 in this: http://www.computing.net/hardware/w...

Reply: (edit)Even PSUs with "dirty" or inadequate power output can cause that (and the 9800 is a power hungry card for its generation), unless you've added any new hardware to your system lately - I wouldn't say that it is. So if you've had the same hardware, the issue is definitely heat related and you need to thouroughly clean out the innards of your system and by that, I mean all fans (PSU, CPU, case, VGA - the whole nine yards). For the PSU you don't have to take it apart (voiding the assumed warranty) to clean out the dust bunnies and other gunk that may have accumulated over time. After the "spring" cleaning, things should be fine, BTW if the card was overclocked as Galileox2 mentionted earlier - that just stacks up the odds against you.

Reply: (edit)Ok i was running throught the first set of instructions and ran into a problem with that ATI Tool program. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/... I tried uninstalling it and trying again, but it still gave me that error message. The only thing that i've changed Hardware wise has been my HDD. I used to run twin WD raptor sata drives, but they seemed to have died on me. so now im running a single Seagate 80gig HDD connected through ide. this problem started showing up maybe 2-3 weeks after i installed the new HDD. I have duel fans blowing right under my VC. They are screwed on so that they are "standing" parallel to my Mobo, and they both look to be running regular. I need help

Reply: (edit)Also, as everyone has pointed out. Do you happen to know the specs of your PSU, its wattage and its amperage? To find this out take off the side panel of your case then read the label and post back your finding so we may help you further.

Reply: (edit)One should not have any problems if Galileox2's instructions were followed precisely as listed. I have done his procedure many times and have resolved many issues that way. Uninstall those drivers again through ADD/REMOVE in the start menu. Then reboot into windows's SAFEMODE, by pressing F8 repeatedly during startup. Run driver cleaner's cab cleaner then run its main program by choosing ATI in the drop down menu, hit clean. Then when its done empty the recycling bin then reboot again and install the new drivers. Only afterwards, install directx9.0c October 2006 update. Keep us updated with your progress.

Reply: (edit)Ok i just went though this process again for the second time. -while in safe mode, i attempted to run the Cab cleaner, but after i clicked on start, it jsut sat there for a few minutes, then all of a sudden my screen went black and kept showing the message "no input signal", i let it sit there for about 10 minutes, but i never changed. so finally i rebooted my machine and i tried running the cab cleaner, this time it worked. i then ran the driver cleaner and it worked fine. (there was nothing in the recycle bin this time) so i restarted installed my new drviers, and still nothing. I just installed the newest directx, but i still can't even get a game to launch anymore. i keep getting an error taht says "unable to start 3d acceleration. Make sure DirectX 9.0c is installed and your drivers are up to date. im pretty sure everything has gotten worse now. I need help

Reply: (edit)Okay, we can resolve this. Do any of your games work? Hit "start", "run" , and type "dxdiag", click display and see if anything is disabled or greyed out?I've had the same problem, turn off 3D acceration, apply that, then turn it back on. That should work.
