Comment:

I've got a IBM Thinkpad 750c from a friend that could'nt get it running.
When booting, there are two beeps and two codes: 161 and 163. a few seconds later, this message appears: I9990303

I does'nt have any manuals or other documents or disks...

Can someone help? I can send a picture of the screen if someone asks me.

/Mizcak

Go to IBM.com and thrash around there. You should be able to find the user manual, the hardware manual, (which you need for the error codes) as well as whatever drivers you need. You want to look for the "driver matrix" page.

If you can't find them, post back--IBM has changed their support pages, and finding some of the older stuff is getting more difficult.

Here's the list I found for the hardware manuals:

i fixed ibm thinkpad for friend who had problems. dont know if same model. I think the error messages were the same from my memory.
It was because CMOS battery dead.
I found the CMOS battery by unscrewing a cover on bottom of laptop which accessed the ram. The CMOS battery had two wires leading to it and was tucked out of site around the edge of the ram. I pulled it out by the wires. Battery was sealed in plastic with the wires going into the plastic. I cut plastic off and found normal CR2032 battery with wires fixed to it. I bought new CR2032 battery for next to nothing and cut the wires off old one and soldered to new one. To get wires to grip to battery when soldering you need to scratch the surface of new battery a lot to give it a key to grip to. Wrapped original plastic and tape round it and all was fine and laptop worked as normal.
The wires can be detached from the mobo where they plug into it.
I assume you can buy the genuine IBM sealed battery with the wires on it but would obviously cost much more and not see easily obtainable the same day.
(of course your thinkpad might be different)

look here:
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=LWIK-3SR4PW&selectarea=SUPPORT&tempselected=5

161 is dead cmos battery, 163 is date/time not set, as you would expect with dead CMOS battery, and I1990303 which is also consistent with dead CMOS battery.

I typed: IBM Thinkpad error 161
into google and that is the first site it suggested

Thanks for your tip's.

When I opened it, I found 2 batteries which I tested.
1 Lithium battery: only 20 mV now, I must probably change that one.
1 Ni-Cd battery: about 2,6 V.

Once again, thanks for your help!
