Problem installing Windows XP still

Specs: Windows XP, 2048
I recently had problems installing windows xp to my GF's hard drives I was able to install it on a small 40gb hd but for some reason the computer would reboot itself when loading windows or just reboot when actually in windows.

Now my father told me it might be the hard drive itself so I went and bought a Seagate Baracuda that's SATA and has 500 GB of space... Now when I boot it using the Windows XP OEM cd that i was able to use to install windows on the 40 gb hd it gets stuck when doing the windows xp set up when copying the files needed to install windows... I'm 99% sure I hooked everything properly, using the SATA cable connected to one of the SATA plugs on the motherboard, and the power cord (b/c these were the same types of plugs on the original hd for my computer and it's worth mentioning that the 40gb hd i used had IDE cables not SATA)

Kind of a few things.

One is if the xp cd is OK. Maybe do a test to a virtual machine. It may only work though if it is a retail version of xp. That xp disk may need to be installed only on that computer if it is an OEM disk.

Second may be the actual computer. I'd get a ultimate boot cd and run some of the tests. One would be memtest and then try the HD test on the old ide drive.

Third is you may need to slipstream drivers for the motherboard sata. It may be possible to switch bios to an ide compatible mode in the sata drive.

i'd test what you have before I went any farther.

"the 40gb hd i used had IDE cables not SATA"

Why did you try putting in a Sata drive then? Doesn't make sense to me.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
