Comment: I am trying to burn a copy of XP Pro on a CD that my friend gave me. The copy that he has me is a copy, and I'm trying to burn it with Nero 5.5 and it gives me an "Unrecoverable read error" at 75%. Anyone have any luck with burning copywrighted CD's? Any suggestions would be great thanks.

Reply: (edit)Hi What I say does not assist with copy any cds:: Outlines common sense. XP's copyright is um ..well microsoft designed each version to be regesterred. Maybe I missed something, but that was the deal, Microsoft expected it to be copied (eg slipstreamed), however still gonna have to pay to get it to work after 30 days if you don't have a licence. So the simple answer is the cd you are coping has a read error (broken) You will still need to pay to get XP to work, so you might as well do yourself a favor and get XP Pro from a shop. If you say - well I can't affort to buy it, then do something clever and get a copy of the more or less cheap (but worth $$$1000) linux distro like Mandrake, knoppix, etc. Learn to use it and love it.

Reply: (edit)I don't condone copyright violations, but sometimes, you might wanna make a backup copy of copyrighted software, "just in case" Are you trying to copy from CD to CDRW? If so, make sure they're not connected to the same IDE cable. OR, you could try copying using the CDRW only...when do it this way, the data will go to a temp file 1st, then be burned back to disk. OR, you could try a different burning program. Go to OldVersion.com & get a program called CloneCD...it's fairly small & simple to use, & it makes exact duplicates

Reply: (edit)I stand by what I said. It doesn't seem that he's trying to make a backup copy of software he purchased (which is legal). He's trying to make an illegal copy of a copy he got from a friend...

Reply: (edit)Hi huh? chilli charlie and Bobthearch summed it up rather well. Making backups of your own material; if the question was in that context, then the answers wouldn't have be so outright. The forum guidelines state this pretty clearly, but I guess Sly006 might have understood better in simpler terms - don't discuss how to "share" purchaseware material. Probably for the fact it is XP, which was meant to be recompiled with the service pack updates, is the only reason I can still reply to this question.

Reply: (edit)google search slipstreaming xp/2000. You will get lots of walkthroughs etc. I have used them myself so that I can add security packs to the main cd and not have to install all that stuff later once I install the OS.
