You have not given any meaningful information about your system nor specific error messages when you try to use both units.
What are the error messages you get? How many USB ports does your system have and have you tried these in different ports?
Have you uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them as per HP instal guides?

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Try separating the USB connection. USB ports usually come two to a controller. You may need to get them on separate controllers.

Good advice by Othehill. Or you could connect them to a powered USB hub. Or even connect one to a powered hub and the other to the motherboard.

It sounds like the pair might be drawing more current than the motherboard can supply.
