I'm running XP and I'm trying to install a Xerox 203-A Laser printer, but after the install procedure (from supplied cd and which all goes ok), Windows isn't finding it.
When I go to Setting/Printers & Faxes, I get a message saying 'operation could not be completed. Print spooler service is not running'. This stops me going any further.
I've checked in Settings/Admin/Services and print spooler is on 'auto' and RPC (remote procedure call) and RPC locator are both running (in auto).
Any ideas?

How is the printer connected to the PC? If it's a USB cable, make sure that USB is enabled and that the cable is connected.

I am running XP Pro. I occasionally get a warning balloon coming up over what looks like a small usb icon, down on the toolbar, saying 'there is a problem with your printer install'. I also get a Xerox warning box that says the same thing. Note that I cannot uninstall the printer program, either in Add/Remove Programs or with the printers own uninstall file.
In Device Manager under USB and Printer Support its says (Xerox) Docuprint 203A is at Location 0 and the device is working properly.
If I unplug the USB plug I get the usual disconnection notice and vice-versa, so the comp does know its there.

Try running a registry cleaner. CCleaner has a decent one that has not removed anything that shouldn't have been removed for me.

Done that, run Regcure and RegscrubXP and still no printer appearing. In Settings/Printers and Faxes all I get is that damn message "Print Spooler not operating" etc and then a brick wall.
I have read that the Brother 2030 drivers will work with this printer (almost identical printer) and am about to try them.
Watch this space.

Didn't follow thru with the Brother idea. Tried a system restore to earlier date and reinstalled with latest set of drivers off Xerox site. After all that - same problem. "RPC server not available" is the main error message I'm getting and because of that the printer is not appearing anywhere, although the usb connection is working.
Any more clues anyone?

According to other forums it may be that the computer is searching for the printer on a network, hence the RPC call. I'm not on a network. Does this help?

Problem solved. There are two files required in System32: spoolsv.exe, which was present, and spoolss.dll - which was NOT present. I obtained spoolss.dll off the net and dropped it in System32 and walla! - my pdf printer appeared along with MS Document Writer. AND I was now ALLOWED to 'install a printer' - which went as smooth as a baby's bum.
Printer is now located and working fine.
COMMENT: I found dozens of posts on other forums with this particular same problem (RPC server not available and/or print spooler not operating). While many of them suggested cleaning the registry, only one respondent suggested checking the existence of these two files which, ironically, are probably removed by malicious software or a virus. The problem is obviously common but the solution not so well known?
