(Don't laugh, I collect old stuff as long as it can be used sooner or later!)

Okay, I have an HP Deskjet 600 Monochrome printer. It needs cleaning and I have an HP cleaning kit for this printer. The problem is that when I open the software and it tells me to sellect a printer, it says that it is not found. This printer installed automatically when I plugged it into my computer. Are my drivers too new? Please help! I have to print a term paper in a week!

P.S. This is my only printer and I plan on using it until my ink runs out (3 more cartridges!)

What type of connection is between the printer and the computer?

According to info I found on the web this printer connects to the computer via a printer cable.

All printer cable connected printers made since the late 90's or so
- require the printer mode be set to EPP or ECP mode - if it is not set to that mode, the software for the printer may not detect it at all.
- the required printer cable is supposed to be IEEE 1284 rated - that is printed on the cord and/or on the end connectors - but often a cable without that will work fine as long as it has a large enough wire guage for its individual wires.

Go into your bios Setup and make sure the printer port is enabled, and that it's mode is set to EPP, ECP, or EPP/ECP mode - usually EPP is fine. Standard or Bi-directional mode is not suitable except for relatively ancient printers.

"According to info I found on the web this printer connects to the computer via a printer cable".

I assume you meant to say a parallel port cable?

Any cable that connects a printer to anything would technically be a printer cable.

Thank's for replying, but the printer works fine. I just need to run the printer cleaner sheet through it. The computer knows the printer is there, just not the software that is used to clean the printer.

I should have read a little more carefully.

I would guess that you have generic Windows drivers installed. Installing the correct drivers, if there are any available may help. If HP no longer has drivers listed try driverguide.

I have tried re-installing the drivers with the 3 floppies that came with the printer, and that didn't help at all. I did find a way to manually clean te printer, but I still would like to know what is wrong for future reference.

If the printer drivers came on floppies you are installing drivers for an earlier operating system. You need drivers that are designed to work under WinXP.

Look at the link below to get the correect drivers and instructions.
