Printer not detected by laptop

Specs: Windows 7
Okay so our new laptop has windows 7 and is an HP laptop and our new printer is also HP, it`s an HP deskjet i downloaded the software from the HP website and its all installed apparently successfully, i just cant seem to actually connect the printer to the laptop. It should be connected via usb and i know the usb port is working and that the connecting cord is working but when i plug the cord into the laptop nothing happens (except that "clunk" sound, i DO hear that but then there's no "new hardware detected" or anything like that...)
is it likely that the printer isnt compatible...even though theyre both HP?

Thanks so much, i really would like to get this printer working soon :)

Lots of USB devices DO NOT work correctly when plugged into a port in an external USB hub.
Plug the printer directly into a USB port built into the laptop's case.

If that doesn't help, if you have an external hard drive plugged into a USB port in the laptops case, directly or indirectly via a hub, unplug it, try the printer again.

If that doesn't help, you didn't follow the installation directions properly

DO NOT plug the USB cable between the printer and the the computer untill AFTER you have installed some of the software - you will be prompted to plug it in.

DO NOT install drivers for the Printer when Found New Hardware pops up !.
