I need to install a USB printer without the installation CD. I downloaded the updated installation software from the Manufacturer's website onto a flash drive, but it didn't say how to install it. Is the installation generally the same as if it was a CD? Or do I need to do something special?

I've installed straight from website, never used a flash drive, I'd say it would be the same as if it was a CD.

Well, the file was too big (166 MB) to install directly from the website. I'm on dialup and it would've taken 7 hrs. So I had someone download it for me to the flash drive.

Maybe I should move the file from the flash drive to a location on the C drive?

what type of file / files is on the flash drive? normally you want to look for a file called 'setup' and double click on it and it starts the installation process.

A frequent requirement of installing a USB connected printer is you are supposed to install the software FIRST, then you plug in the USB cable to the printer. You may be asked to plug in the USB cable to the printer in the latter part of the software and drivers installation. The power on the printer may also need to be switched on when you do that, but some start up automatically.

Another thing it is usually NOT a good idea to do is when you plug in a new USB connected device and if Windows doesn't find drivers for it automatically, point Windows to where the drivers are that you have downloaded or that are on a CD - that often results in an improper installation. Cancel that, let the Desktop screen load if you were asked while booting, then run the proper Setup or installation for the device.

Other than that, the software and drivers installation should give you no problems.
