Printer causes laptop to crash

Canon Pixma mp240 usb 2.0 all-in-one pri...

Specs: Windows Vista SP2
The problem started when my partner brought home an old printer from work a while back and thought it'd just plug-and-play without the install discs. Which it didn't.

Since then, every time the Canon is connected to the laptop, it crashes as soon as the usb is connected-everything just stops responding and the only way I can get it running again is through a hard shutdown.
I've tried returning to an earlier restore point than when the other printer was conected, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer, and downloading the latest drivers for it, but the same problem still occurs.

Any ideas as to the problem or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like that printer has a problem with it that is overloading the USB port. Maybe that is why the printer was available.

Does that USB port work with other hardware?

You could try running the Canon driver removal tool. Get it at the link below.
