Hi
I recently build a system for a friend of mine and everything went smooth.
But once in a while I get this message during boot: "Primary Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible. Press F1 to resume"
and sometimes it just boots without any error messages.
I have the following setup:
Primary master: IMB HD 40 gb/7200rpm with OS
Primary slave: AOpen DVD rom drive 1648/AAP
Secundary master: AOpen CD-RW 5232
Secundary slave: none so far, might add a 2nd hard drive for data.

Since the PC is for a newbie in computers, I need to figure out what's causing this problem.
I already flashed the firmware of both drives but have run out of solutions.

Any thoughts on this are welcome!
Thanks in advanced,

~Liz

Hopefully you're using master/slave jumper settings on your devices & not cable select? Did you have this prob before flashing the firmware?

I would change the dvd over to the secondary channel as a slave and see if you still have the same issue.

The drive isn't being recognised properly in the BIOS. Set to auto and hit F3. The drive model should show up instead of auto. If this doesn't happen, check jumpers and cables.

Im not using cable select, i have the jumper setup.
I had this problem indeed after flashing, but now there's not even a LED burning. I also changed the setup as Robbie sugested, with the same results.
It still has my cd inside and i hooked up in 2 other systems; same results.
It also doesn't show up in the BIOS...

Are you sure you have power connected to the drive. If no lights are on that is a sign of no power. Try a different power connector.

I'm not sure if this would help you but a little while ago I put a new HD in my kid's computer and it would not show up. What ended up being the problem was that there was not a capacity limitation jumper on it when I got it so I put one on and it worked great after that. It's just a thought.

If I understand correctly you have a DVD drive that is connected but not showing any signs of life. If no lights go on any tray will not eject with known good power connected, the drive is dead. The tray should work even if there is no data cable connected.

Sorry about that guys. I didn't catch the primary "slave" drive. I'll make sure to read it more carefully next time.

OtheHill,
you are correct; the dvd drive's LED does not blink or anything.

I eventually gave up and returned it to the store where they tested it and admitted it was defective.
So much for my headaches alright :)
Anyway, I got a new one and they managed to get my cd out.

I want to thank you all for your efforts on helping me and i hope i can do the same for you too, someday.
