The cdrom doesn't necessarily need to show in cmos/bios setup.

Are you just now installing the drive in the computer or has it been in the computer for awhile? If it's new what is the model number?

If it previously worked OK in the computer, what happened to it between the last time it worked and the first time it didn't?

It sounds like the drive may be bad. But check to make sure it's properly identified in cmos/bios setup. Try a different power connection too.

Can you tell if the drive is spinning up?

Also make sure you have the jumpers for each drive on the same cable set correctly.

I suggest master on the HDrive and slave on the CD drive.

You DO have a power connector as well as the data cable connected to the drive? Does the drive spin up? You should be able to hear and feel it.

Did you check in the BIOS to verify BOTH IDE controllers are enabled? That isn't on the drive configuration page.

If you have a known working power connector plugged in and the drive isn't spinning then it is dead.
