"i didnt get a backup or vista disk"

The backup/recovery files are on the hard drive on a hidden partition. You should have created the recovery discs a LONG time ago. Too late now. But if the hard drive is bad, they'd be useless anyway. You can't fix a bad drive. Try running a diagnostics program to check the drive's condition before running out & buying a replacement.

Use Seatools from Seagate burned to a bootable CD to test hard drive of unknown manufacturer.
Contact Sony for a Recovery Disk Set in order to reload your system onto a new hard drive. Be prepared to supply the full and correct model number and serial number. Be prepared to pay a fee since you were warned to make a recovery disk set if you read the paperwork that came with the machine.
Understand that if the drive is not working at all, you cannot recover any personal files from it without spending a lot of money for professional data recovery services. You should also have been making regular back ups of your personal files. All software that you have added will need to be reinstalled as well.
If the drive DOES report as good in Seatools then use a Live Linux (like Puppy Linux) run off a CD or DVD (not installed) to save your files and follow your online manual to initiate a Factory Restore from your hard drive's Recovery Partition. If this works, make that recovery disk set immediately (you are allowed to make one set only so keep it safe).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
