hello guys!!

I have a problem with the laptop I am fixing. When it boots up it just displays black screen. No text or cursor or what so ever. You might have thought its black out but it isn't. How did I know?? Because the Vaio Logo was displayed every time it boots up. I was able to get into the BIOS setup. It also has a good beep (the you hear after POST).

So I just thought it might be the HDD. Since there was no display at all (no text saying "Press F1 to continue"), I just press F1 anyway and then... it loads the OS and everything seems to be ok. So, now every time I boot up, I need to press F1 to make the OS load.

Now my question is, is there any work around for this? I already checked the bios and I set my HDD as 1st boot but the problem is still there. I even tried to "Set Bios Default" settings but to no avail.

any suggestions guys??

i dont understand why it is blank but to avoid having to press f1 I would be looking at the bios to see if there are any settings relating to booting from a network / lan as it might be trying to do that first. These settings are often separate from the boot order / boot priority. They vary but I would be looking for anything which mentions booting from network or lan, sometimes it mentions PXE on the item descriptions

Check in cmos/bios setup again. There may be an option to show the diagnostic screen instead of the vaio logo. May also be an option there to hide the F1 or F2 options.

I did'nt see anything on the bios related to disabling F1. The problem started when the HDD started to work intermittently.

On those systems that display the 'press F1 to continue' the reason is usually a hardware change the bios has detected. The total message usually has something to the affect 'or press F2 to enter bios setup' added to it.

Even though yours isn't showing that, you may want to enter bios setup and then exit, saving the settings.

It's also possible your cmos battery is dead and the message (if it was showing) is alerting you to a date and time reset. You can easily check that by seeing if the date is correct when it gets to windows.

You say 'The problem started when the HDD started to work intermittently'. Does that mean you're having a problem in addition to having to press F1 to get it into windows?

Nope!! I don't have any other problems. The BIOS and battery are ok. The dates and time are correct. The problem started when my HDD crashed. Back then I thought I have a dead board because it does'nt display anything. No text messages, nothing at all. Just a black screen even without a blinking cursor. Its a good thing I pushed F1, that was just then I discovered that the HDD was not loading.

It was just annoying that whenever you restart or open up the PC and leave it.. it wont load by its own. F1 should be pushed to load Windows.. WEIRD huh!!

Unless F1 is a proprietary function for the Vaio, it should work because the bios is detecting a problem or change and F1 bypasses it. Best thing I can suggest at this point is to enter cmos and then exit saving changes.
