WinXP - Home

Suddenly XP will not PowerOff - it gets past the 'Saving Settings' Page and then 'hangs' on 'Windows is Shutting Sown' - this happens with both Re-Start and Turn Off

There's nothing amiss in Device Manager, no 'Problem Devices' in System Info and no Error in the Event Viewer

I have tried 'Last Known Good Configuration', System Restore and sfc /scannow

I have looked at the MicroSoft KB Articles but none is exactly relevant

I have made no alterations in the BIOS

I don't want to do a Repair unless it is really necessary and would it help anyway?

Anyone know about this?

Thanks - Lesley

Thanks for your replies

I think I have found the cause - I have a BroadBand Internet Connection and yesterday I Installed a 56K PCI DailUp Modem to use as a BackUp

Both Modems are working perfectly well, as is XP but for some reason best known to itself the PCI Modem caused the ADSL one (on a USB Hub) to disappear from the Modems List in the Control Panel - I hadn't noticed that at first in spite of looking! - so I suppose it's not being recognised by XP in spite of it working ok

I think that is the cause of Window's reluctance to Power Off - I shall find out tomorrow - I shall disconnect the ADSL Modem from the Hub and then re-connect it and the Hardware Wizard will detect it again - I hope!

Lesley
