I have this Sony Vaio Desktop computer, that a co-worker brought in for me to look at. His problem is that sometime his computer turns on and sometime it doesn't. I tested it this morning and everything turned on fine. I went back about five minutes ago to show him everything was fine and it did not want to come back on. I went to my office and grabbed a power supply tester and tested the ATX power supply. The tester said it was fine so I plugged it back into the computer and it the Desktop turned on. I want to tell him to get another power supply but I wanted to get some other suggestions before I tell him to go spend money on a new one.

What do you think?

Bil,

I have done that already, I just wasn't sure if it was a power supply problem or possibly a motherboard problem.

When you say it doesn't always turn on, does that mean absolutely nothing happens as if it isn't even plugged in? or do the fans spinup but the system refuses to boot?

The power does not turn on at all no fans spin or no lights come on. System completely dead. If I unplug it and plug it back in. The system is able to power on.
