System restarts on its own
Spontaneously goes into standby
Fan does not run, runs slowly, or runs noisily
Computer is heating up
Dim display
Any number of different things. Almost all PSU symptoms are also symptoms of another failure. For instance, a dying PSU can cause lockups or invalid page faults or disconnections from the Internet.

Computer may not power on or may not complete PoST
Drives may not work intermittently
Multiple drives must be replaced repeatedly
Crackling audio
Computer running slowly
Drives intermittently not detected

Like I said... almost all PSU symptoms are also symptoms of other failures.

I had a feeling it was my psu. I'm having almost all of the above happening to my computer. System locks up audio skips. I have a 2200 amd with 512mb ram and my computer runs slower than a 800 mhz Celeron with 128mb ram. It's kind of pathetic. And this all happened slowly it just kept getting worse and worse every couple of days and now i'm just ready to chuck it out the window. Thanks for the advice I hope it works.

Remember: It may not be the PSU.

You could be having software or hard drive issues.

You could test to see if your problem is that your power supply is having trouble meeting the load you are putting on it by disconnecting a few things and see if you are still having problems.
eg, disconnect power to floppy and cr rom drives and maybe also take out your sound and modem cards etc, anything to reduce the power load.
If this solves your problem then either you need a bigger (or better) power supply, or possibly one of the devices/cables you removed/disconnected is faulty (you could easily test for this by swapping parts around).

You could also try unplugging everything (including your motherboard) and plugging it back in in case something is loose (and check for bad, dirty, or bent pins while you're at it).

AMD's need lots of power. I think you want a 300w power supply to run them but this will be dependant on what else you are running. Celerons dont need much power so if you upgraded an old box it may not have enough grunt for the AMD.

I'd check your case temperature as well. If your machine is too hot then lots of strange things can start happening.

Good luck,

G'day,

This link may well help shed some light on it.

Above symptoms - on mine too. Drives would come and go intermittently.

Replaced CMOS battery first ast about time, everything was picked up for about 4 days, then boom, would loose a device or 2.

Changed power supply, computer is 100 x faster.

**But if I plug 2 devices in, originally store bought that way, CDROM and CDR both are lost. I plug only CDR in and no problems whatsoever, problem seems to be fixed.

Will try another cable tomorrow, then get cable if that.

Hope it's not my CDR going bad, is a Phillips CDRW, I use it constantly though. Only this time if it turns out to be the CDRW I will get an external, I'll take a device that runs slower with its own fan as opposed to the above stated outcome.

Hope this helps.
