Ok, my Gateway 2000 died a noisy death two days ago. I was sitting at the computer working normally when I heard a bizarre zap, then a pop, then it was dead.

I'm pretty secure in my knowledge of the software I use, but I'm limited in my knowledge of hardware.

I suspect that the problem is the power supply (I attempted to plug it in/turn it on again the next day, but it was dead...didn't get anything, not even a funny noise...nothing).

My question is this...
The current power supply is a 200watt Newton power supply (model No. NPS-200PB-88 A).

I searched the gateway site to find a replacement for it, but the page is empty (shows the part number: 6500457, but that's it). I've looked around, but can't find much on the part. Do I have options as to what I can buy? Different brands? Wattage, etc?

Could the following power supply work?
http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/micro-atx-200-watt-power-supply-for-emachine.htm
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance.

I dont' know machine interior so i can't tell if that power supply is fit with your comp. However, i find these should fit with yours, you can check base on the size and shape, if they look alike then perfect:

Try to get at least 250Watt if you have additional devices installed.

Ok, I looked at the links you posted. I've actually seen a couple of them previously.

My question:
Can I simply use a 250watt power supply if it fits my computer? I don't have to worry about having too much power, or some voltage thing? I know next to nothing about all of this.

Also, the power supply in your last link, while it appears to be the same size, looks a bit different than the model that just died on me. The fan is flat with the surface of the box, but mine has a fan that is slightly raised from the main box (as in the picture here: http://support.gateway.com/s/power/6500457/650045701.shtml) Does that make a difference?

As I said before, any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Inside the psu is a fuse. Have you checked it?

Do so with the power *DISCONNECTED*.

If blown, replace.

Blow out any muck with a hairdryer set to cold and max blast. Assist with a thin brush.

Good luck - Keep us posted.

You'd have to somehow verify this, but I believe Gateway uses standard ATX power supplies. The PSU dimensions should be the same regardless of wattage, so you if you wanna go with 250W, 300W, etc, you should have no problem fitting it in the case. Since this is a Pentium 2 system, the amperage on the +12v isn't critical - that's because the CPU is powered by the +5v rail, not the +12v.

Here's a cheap 300W unit that gets good reviews at newegg.com:
