Subject: Power supply for AMD Athlon? OS: n/a CPU/Ram: Athlon 800/128 MB

Comment: Hello, I purchased a case today for an AMD Athlon system that I am building(I have a Gigabyte GA-7ZX motherboard/Athlon 800 Mhz Chip). The power supply that came with my case is a "TR 350-W Switching Power Supply". I don't know much about power supplies at all, and this one has a couple stickers on it saying "For Pentium IV". I'm just wondering if it would be alright to use this with the system I am building, or is it designed specifically for a Pentium IV computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. -Dustin

Reply: (edit)Power supplies are not tied to any particular CPU, only the power the need. As a Pentium IV consumes far more power than an Athlon 800, 350W will be plenty. Also to consider are other items like disk drives, video card and memory. However, 128 Mbs, one hard disk, a CD Rom and reasonable video card shouldn't tax a 350W power supply. Stuart

Reply: (edit)Pentium IVs need an extra power cable from the power supply for a second power connector that they have. That cable will just be left unconnected for non-Pwntium IV motherboards.

Reply: (edit)Exactly...a P4 PSU has an extra plug necessary for the P4 system. As stated by gary, the PSU will still work with an Athlon system, but the extra P4 plug will be unused, that's all. Otherwise, 350 watts is fine
