Okay, as some of you may have already read in another post of mine, I'm going to upgrade my GeForce 4 MX440 card to a GeForce FX when it comes out (Mostly to boost speeds for games like Doom3) Also, I'm going to upgrade my RAM from 256 MB to 1 gig of DDR. I'll have an extreme gaming system after I make those upgrades. That is, if my power supply can handle it! I've got a Dell PC with a 250W power supply. Will that be enough to handle a GF FX video card and a gig of memory?

No. I suggest to anyone running a P4/Athlon XP system to get an Enermax/Antec 330-350W PSU.

WOW!

Buying a $400+ video card for a few more FPS in a game that isn't even released yet...

My first piece of advice is to ditch the Dell. Also, 1 GB of memory is probably overkill, 512 would probably work just as well, or at very least hold you over until you can upgrade to a non-OEM machine.

The biggest problem you have is your power supply. Not only is your power supply inadequate for your proposed setup, but you won't be able to just go out and buy a replacement because you have an OEM machine and more than likely a non-standard/proprietary power supply.

I agree. Although I would go with a 400 to 450 watt PSU. I am assuming the FX will want a 300 just for it. Nice to have a little extra for other things. Good luck though, you have a Dell which probably has a proprietary PSU set up. So finding one that will fit in may be difficult.

I have read many posts here re standard power supplies not fitting dell.

Does dell even have a mobo with an 8x AGP? I don't think so.

Thanks for your feedback everyone. I guess that I don't have a standard power supply. Opened the PC and the power supply was Dell branded, which I guess means non-replaceable
Is there still any way to get another PSU though? If not, can I take out one of my optical drives? I've got a CD-ROM drive and a CD-RW/DVD Combo drive. I don't really use the CD-ROM drive, so if I took it out, would I have more extra power available, or would this even have an effect?
Oh, and I thought of something. Could I order a bigger PSU directly from Dell? I was on the Dell Website, and I found some Dell power supplies. I'm assuming that since it's from Dell, it's the right type.

UTLLAMA, I know my FX is sort of overkill, but it makes sense, right. I wouldn't have to upgrade for years after!

efabes, I don't think Dell has 8X motherboard, but I'm sure the FX is 4X compatible.

Again, thanks!!

Not many mobo's are 8x compatible right now (at least while I have been shopping the last month).

Why spend the money on an 8x card and not be able to take full advantage of it?

You could buy a new case-with-built-in-power-supply/mobo and rebuild your pc for about $200. Make sure the mobo has an 8x AGP and works with your current processor and memory.
