Power starts up but no display on s

Dell / Dimension c521
March 19, 2009 at 03:23:15
Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home SP2, 2.126 GHz / 2044 MB
On the front the green network light is lit, and two numbers 3 and 4 is blinking. After a while the fan is slowly speeding up, eventually to an unnormal high speed.
No sound when I try to hit any keys (even when I hold down a key for a long time).

Sometimes, the computer starts up normally. One time, it started up normally, and windows loaded. I logged on my user, but before I got to start any programs, the screen turned black, and the NUMLOCK light on my keyboard went out (this was lit), and everything turned to the state as described above. Normally, I don't even get the startup screen from bios.

From that page, when you click on the link to Diagnostic Lights it goes to here:

Since the computer sometimes works, the most likely thing is you have a poor connection of the ram in the ram slots.

See response 2 in this - try cleaning the contacts on the ram modules, and making sure the modules are properly seated:

My computer has actually worked fine for some days now. I will check the RAM connection if it happens again.
Thanks for the pointer to the Dell diagnostics page.
My computer has been travelling and stored away for a period, so the RAM connection could have been shaken loose in transport.
