Power problem on Compaq laptop

Hi,
I am having a problem with the power on my laptop. I turn the laptop on with battery in place and laptop connected to mains power supply. Every couple of minutes the power cuts out and switches to the battery, I then unplug the power cable and re-plug back in but anything from less than a minute to a couple of minutes later the power cuts out again over to the battery. I have checked the power plug which is ok, the battery is old and pretty worn out but I cannot even use the laptop without the battery due to the power cutting out. Any ideas? Thanks
