power down problem

i have a laptop that just started shutting down on its own..at first it will boot up and you see the windows xp screen and then it just shuts down and loses power. so i thought maybe the os is corrupted. i started to reinstall the os and it gets to the screen where i tell it which drive to install it on and it just shuts down. it really doesnt matter which screen im on its just any given time..any ideas

also as long as i stay in the bios, it doesnt seem to power down...if i go out into xp or try to reinstall any thing, it will power down..help
