The power button on my HP Pavilion 3100 will not function as a power button. All that will happen is the computer will go into sleep mode when button is pressed. It has the power symbel (little circle with line going through half of it).

I tried holding down the button for 10 seconds, and there is no option for it in the Power control panel.

Bios dosn't have any settings for it.

There is a power switch on the back of the computer, so at one point this button was suppost to turn the computer off.

Can any body help me with this?

Unfortunately commercial, proprietary units are difficult to analyze with problems like this because each one has custom made mainboards and components(aka shrink-wrapped everything). However, if it is like a normal mainboard, there is a cable leading from your power switch on the front of the case to a female socket on the mainboard. Now, on the mobos that I buy to build, each female socket on the mobo is labeled; that may not be the case with HP. It sounds as if the power switch plug is inserted into the sleep/hibernate socket.

Of course, HP isn't interested in helping you troubleshoot your own computer, so they may not be labeled and I would guess you will have probs finding a schematic that will tell you which socket is for which feature. Best I can do, hope it helps!

Actually the power button plugs in to a male connector.

I never though of plugging it into a alternate jack somewhere on the motherboard. I will see if I can find one that may turn off the computer.

Untill then, anyone else that comes by, please post.
