I've had a load of problems fixing my mum's system - had trouble getting the pc to POST, but have gotten past that now. The POST happens incredibly slowly (and displays the POST codes, which I have looked up and don't seem to represent errors). The hard drive is pickup up during POST, but when the POST is done (4 mins?) I get a 'no boot disk' error. The hard disk is fine, tested in another system (this one in fact-using it now!). I've cleared CMOS and it hasn't helped.. I can boot from the floppy without a problem. Could a very very slow POST be due to cheap RAM (ddr 2100)? Any thoughts on why the hard disk isn't being seen as a boot disk? (I have tried forcing the bios to see this drive alone as the boot drive without success).

Why not try using another hard disk on the PC instead of trying the one under question on another PC.

If the other hard disk doesn't work, we can safely discount any hard disk failure.

When you tested to HDD in another system, did you boot from the drive? Or did you boot from another drive then access the drive?

You could try refreshing the boot sector. Boot with a full boot disk. Type 'Fdisk /mbr' then press enter. Remove the boot disk and retry.

Rimfire - I booted from the drive, and have had no problem with it in the machine I'm working on now. As Aftab suggested I tried another hdd in the problem system with the same error, so I'm fairly certain the drive itself is fine - I'm veering towards the view that the mobo is to blame. Power and IDE cables seem to be fine. Considering flashing the latest bios to see if it helps.. further thoughts?
