Subject: Possible PSU problemOS: XP ProCPU/Ram: Intel Celeron 2.6 |
Comment: I recently built a new pc with a cheap Gigabyte mobo. A few weeks after using it, it gave me a CMOS battery failed error on start up. This problem went away after a few more weeks. I then got a Radeon 9800 Pro 256 mb and now the computer will freeze completly or get fuzzy lines. No error messages are given. It seems to happen when playing games or using heafty programs. Similar posts suggest it is a psu issue but could it be a mobo issue that caused the battery failure? Maybe the psu is too small, would a 400W be enough? Reply: (edit)What is the 12v amp distribution on your current 200W PSU. (Check the side label on the PSU) -- Always do what you are afraid to do --

Reply: (edit)Psu sounds like a great place to start. 200w is a little whimpy with todays sytems. A 400w should be more than adequate unless you are planning to add a good deal more hardware such as multiple harddrives and the like. Not sure but I think 300w is about the least amount needed for alot of the newer vid cards.
