Hey ya'll,
I just purchased a PNY fx5600 ultra 400gpu/800mem.the new ones.I have researched these cards before i went out and purchased it.
I first bought a BFG card with same specs. as the PNY.I installed the bfg everything seemed fine. When i was checking to see if indeed this was a 400core/800mem.it said it was under the specs. that are on the box.I figured this is what it runs at in 2d mode ok but that is not the whole problem.Anytime i install a new componate i check the fans plugs etc.,the fan was working fine.About 10 mins. of reading the on computing.net i looked under the card to make sure its still working(paranoia i guess) and the fan was not spinning i then touch the hsf to see if it was hot to the touch it was cool.I then shut down properly and checked all connections (ok) i rebooted and the fan was spinning alright a few minutes later off again. My question is is this normal for the fx's cards, I could not fine any info on the web or here on this. Now this happens with both cards BFG & PNY.i already returned the BFG card.
I thought i would post this here in case somebody had a answer for me before i e-mail PNY about this.
Thanks in advance Ladies & Gents.
PS. Both of the cards have big and efficient looking hsf's on them, and yes i do have the extra 4pin molex plugged in the card. lol

I cant believe out of the probably 1000's of users on this sight no one has a fx5600u and noticed that their fan quits periodically.
I've installed it in 3 comps now and it still does this,so its not my mobo or agp slot.I ran 3dmark 2001 and the fan kicked in.But it froze up about halfway thru i think this was because of DX9 or a driver issue.I've been playing Delta Force 2 online for 2 hours now and no problems yet.
Well anyway I hope somebody knows a answer to this because i've been to BFG AND PNY websites and cant find any info about this.
I e-mailed them maybe they will reply to this.If this is the case they should advertise (THE FAN STOPS WHEN NOT IN 3D MODE) at least on the box, manual or website etc...somwhere DANGIT.Ya'll have a good labor day weekend

That is by design. The fan will automatically shut off when running in 2D mode once the processor is cooled. When running in 3d mode the fan comes on. This actually is a great feature because the card runs quieter when just using the pc to surf the web and when you are running a game you usually have the speakers up anyway. BTW, I have the PNY 5600 Ulta and the card kicks butt. Way better and faster then ATI 9500 Pro and ATI 9600 Pro Also, the ATI cards do not have this feature so the fans run all the time which makes for more noise when running 2D applications.
