I have a Dell Latitude J650GT laptop that's about 3 or 4 years old. I've been redoing this computer by reinstalling 2000 XP and 98 on it. I've been using the CDROM pretty heavy lately doing all of that stuff. All of a sudden, I insert a CD, and close the door, then the drive makes awful vibrating and clicking noises. The eject didn't work, so I shut down as quick as I could, and stuck a pin in the tiny hole to open the door. I noticed the laser was over to the far left. I can't tell what's wrong. Why is it clicking and is it fixable without having to pay anything? Thanks.

Was you able to eject the drive using a paper clip in the pin hole? Try rebooting after you get the drive open and see what happens.

Yes, I was able to eject the drive using a paper clip. With the door open, it's fine -- it dosn't make noise. I can't find anything wrong with it other than the laser is pushed all the way to the left. Can't find out whats vibrating. Any other ideas will be very appreciated.

the cdrom is probably broken. time to see about getting a replacement. or send it to Dell for repair.
