How dangerous is it to plug in a parallel device to my laptop while the power is on? I know I can remove/plug in PS/2 mice with power on. Is it different? Will my parallel port be killed if I do?

You gotta be kidding! Parallel printers are not plug and play (USB and PS/2). hmmm ...... try it yourself and tell us what happen to your $2,000 laptop

I have done it a few times with no problems, it won' hurt anything but the PC/Laptop won't recognize the printer until the computer is restarted

Well, the correct way to connect PARALLEL cable is this way:
