Hi all,
I have a Plextor PX708A DVD+- burner. I've recently bought a new batch of 8x dvd-r (Memorex). I can't seem to be able to burn at 8x. The firmware is up to date. I tried using Nero 6.3.1.20 and Roxio EZCD Creator 7. Both of them say that the burner can burn at a max of 4x. I've previously been using Memorex 4x DVD-r without any problems.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is?
Any suggestions would be great.
Thx.

It could be that the disks aren't up to snuff. I would say this. I personnally don't use maximum burn speeds with optical drives because I believe this increases the chance of write errors. Unless you review each disk after a burn you don't really have any means to verify the disk is good other than the burner software indicating a ggod burn. This can come back to bite and so that is why I have this person policy. Back to your issue. Have you ever burned any disks at 8x? You may want to review the specs on the drive. Many drives can burn 8x using one fromat but not the other. This applies to both CDR and CDRW. Check your specs. If after checking the specs you still feel the burner should burn 8x in the format of those disks then try another brand.

Thanks.
I've almost always burned at max speed without any problems. I ran verification the first few times, but now I pretty much trust the drive to do what it does.
I'll have to carefully read the specs for future purchases.
Thanks again.

I believe the burn specs you have are pretty standard. There are pros and cons with any standard and I guess the slower burn speed is a con with this format.
