please help my mic doesnt work!

please i'm quite good with computers but have been working on this problem for weeks now and just cant figure it out. Basically i have a head set which is headphones and a mic and i can hear music and warning sounds and such thru the headphones but the mic doesnt work. i know that by default it is usually on mute(i have XP) but i have taken it off of mute and checked all the right boxes but stll i cant get it to wrk at all. please any one that can help please please get bak to me!! when i do the testing mic thing in sound speach and audio devices the bar just does not detect it at all. i have a 2.6gh e machines desktop pc with XP sp1

Have you tested the mic on a different PC, and have you tested a known working mic on your PC?

yes i know its definatly not the mic i have tested 3 now and noje of them work on my pc. x

i was thinking not long after i bought the pc a bout 2yrs ago i had to re install the whole thig but my reboot disk did not work so i just put another xp sp1 on my pc would this have affected it or not?? would i have to install some aditional software>>????

Long shot! But a few sound cards are built to use a powered mic. They use a stereo jack and supply the power through the extra connection. Mics with a mono plug will not work with these cards.
Of course the mic input circuit on the card 'could' be bad.

i have bought another mic that is conected with the usual leads and is also conected by the usb to give it power but still no mic action!

Just a thought. Have you toggled between record and playback after you unclicked the mute?
