You need a video card that supports TV-OUT

Many TV's may not support 800x600 or higher resolutions.

Inverto is sorta correct, but the resolution of a Tv is even less than 800x600, it's closer to 640x480. TVs make incredibly bad monitors, unless they are High definition TVs.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Yes you'll need TV-out...
Also, i think it's the videocard that has to support higher resolutions on TV-mode, most modern cards will do up tp 1024x768.

in my experience the picture on a TV screen connected to the TV out on a computer is usually rubbish quality unless you are playing a DVD in the computer, then it seems perfectly fine.
i've never understood how it can be so good on a DVD movie fed from the PC to the TV but so bad when it is the desktop screen or whatever that is displayed.

True.. when your are on the desktop everything is a bit vague, i think it's because of the larger pixels... But when watching movies or playing games it will work perfectly.
When gaming on a TV you'll even need less anti aliasing to make perfectly smooth edges.

You'll need a black TV-out cable most of the time it comes with the videocard when you buy it:

And if you want sound you'll need an audio cable which has 1 black plug on one side which goes in your PC's line-out (green) and on the other side is splits into two plugs either red and white or red and yellow... these you have to put in your tv's audio-in or in your amplifier if you have one:

Oh, and make sure you set the resolution of your desktop and all your games you intend to play on TV, down to 640x320 BEFORE you put it on TV.. otherwise, you may get no screen... Then you can experiment with the resolution a little to find out the max your TV will do.

"where dows the other end of that black tv out cable go"

Well, not all TV's have such a connector.. if they dont then they usually have 3 smaller ones collored red, white and yellow..
In this case you need to buy a TV-out cable which splits into these 3 colours.
