Comment:

I have spent the last three days trying to solve this problem. So far I've found nothing. I am trying to play Fallout 3 without getting a new graphics card. However, it appears that my "Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family" graphics card doesn't work with the game. I don't know why this is because it meets all the other specs both for the game and specific to the graphics card. Is there a way that I can keep my current setup and still play Fallout 3? I'm including a url that i think will work. It's basically my specs compared to the minimum required for Fallout 3.

What version video driver are you using?

This may also prove to be an interesting read.

Edit...And you'll need these drivers that support hardware T&L if you want the slightest chance of running this game.

The 2nd link I provided points you to the Intel drivers that will enable hardware T&L for your chipset. If you already have these drivers and it still won't work, then the reality is that it will probably never work.

After spending a few minutes with my friend Google, I discovered that a few people have managed to get it running with onboard Intel graphics. I found nothing specific, but there was mention of having to modify the games ini file, however, there were reports that the game was quite buggy under these circumstances.

Well yes, but Mobile On-board Intel Graphics are different to PC On-board Intel Graphics. Give it a try but without T&L support etcetc it will be a comprimised experience. Maybe do a Google for External Graphics Card!

The minimum graphic requirement for Fallout 3 is "Direct X 9.0c compliant videocard with 256MB RAM (NVIDIA 6800 or better / ATI X850 or better)"

Your laptop? uses the GMA X3100 integrated graphics. It does NOT meet the minimum requirements for the game. It doesn't even come close. There's nothing you can do to make it work...no patch, no driver update, etc.

So I'm looking at my options as they stand:

1) Buy a new internal graphics card and have it installed-$100

2) Figure out the deal about external graphics cards-Many hours and possibly hundreds of dollars

3) Modify the ini file-priceless

Unfortunately, my price range for this project does not include any three-digit numbers. If I were to get an external graphics card, what kind of connection would I want to my computer? Would It even work with the game? I've learned more about computers in the last 4 days than my whole life up to then. So I have no shot of modifying that file on my own let alone finding it in the millions of files on my computer. If I had a step-by-step guide I could probably figure it out...

"external graphics cards" don't exist.

i could be wrong, but i doubt it.

the limitations of the interface (even USB3.0 or FireWire800) would be a choke-point for the graphics processor. That's why video cards are installed directly into the motherboard, so that they can exchange info with the CPU and RAM as rapidly as possible.

"So I'm looking at my options as they stand"

No, none of those "options" are options at all:

1) the graphics are integrated into the motherboard & are NOT upgradeable.

2) external graphics solutions are available but are extremely expensive (over $400) & as mentioned above, they're hampered by the external interface.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...

3) altering the .ini file will NOT work. The GMA X3100 is NOT meant for higher end gaming. Did you check the link I posted in response #7? DOOM3 isn't playable even at the lowest settings. No software hack, driver update or patch will change that.

Your laptop is not a decent gamer & there's nothing you can do about it. And if your "price range for this project does not include any three-digit numbers", you can absolutely forget about it...a decent gaming laptop runs in the 4-digit numbers.

Solution: stick to older games.

I saw the asus thing too but I couldn't find it anywhere. Is it even for sale? Gosh. I thought I was getting a sweet computer...:( Why doesn't my chipset work with the game anyway? It appears that it's comparable... Is it just the L and T thing? Because if that's all it is, there has to be a way around it.

Because I loved the old two but they don't work with Vista and I'm a poor college student and can't buy a new computer. I've been looking forward to this game for years now and I can't even play it! I've already dropped $50 on this. :( IT"S REALLY FRUSTRATING!

What is it that you don't understand?? Your graphics are not up to par & there's not a freakin thing you can do about it!

If your were to take the time to check the links I've supplied or done some research on your own you'd know that the Intel 965GM chipset/GMA X3100 does support T&L! T&L support is not the problem...the problem is the X3100 graphics are too weak for modern games.

There are two versions on the Studio 1535...the lower end one (which you bought) has GMA X3100 graphics. The more expensive one has ATi 3450 graphics. But even the ATI graphics aren't powerful enough for modern games.

Here's another link for you:

http://www.insidehw.com/Reviews/Not...

And since you probably won't bother to click on it, here's a clip from the article:

"When we talk about performances of Dell Studio 1535 we must say that they have two faces. Better one shows itself while using CPU intensive applications because of newest Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.1GHz. Integrated graphics can be used for playing older games but you can forget on playing any of newer game releases. There are models equipped with ATi 3450 graphics card but even this card is not suitable for newest games, it performs much better than Intel X3100. Good news is that Studio 1535 has 2GB of RAM."

And in a review article of the better version, this is what was written:

"Despite the Mobility Radeon HD 3450, this isn't really a gaming machine"

http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/har...

Solution: stick to older games.

I have clicked on every link. Don't be a jerk just because I want to find a way around it. There is a way around everything. You just have to know where it is and how to work it. And as I explained, the older games are not compatable with Vista. Incase you were unaware, Black Isle Studios no longer exists.

I'm not the one being a jerk. You have to face the fact that there is no way around it, not with what you have. Your laptop simply doesn't meet the MINIMUM hardware requirements. Why is that so difficult to understand? Your laptop has a sh!tty graphics chip & no software hack can overcome that. You MUST have the hardware!

"There is a way around everything"

Sure there is - buy a new laptop!

Here's a benchmark comparison list of 170 notebook graphics cards. The GMA X3100 ranks 132nd:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile...

Or to put it another way, the GMA X3100 is considered a Class 5 card. For gaming, "a card of the performance class 1 or 2 is recommended"..."Graphic cards of the performance class 3 should be regarded as a minimum"

If nothing you've read so far can convince you, maybe this will:
