So, are you now using compatible cartridges from another source or batch? Not all compatible cartridges are equal.

No, I have been using compat. cartridge from a diff supplier which has worked OK for quite a while but then stopped even though cartridge not run out of ink. In the meantime I have now purchased Canon carts. just to make sure printer is OK and it is.

Replacement printer carts. have to be one of the biggest consumer rip offs of all time. I suspect printers themselves are kind of "programmed" to reject non orig. carts. Thanks for your reply

Your suspicions are correct. The replacement companies can't reverse engineer the chips in the print head. So, depending on the brand you may or may not be able to use third party supplies. In the case of toner cartridges the cartridge may need to be reset.

I just bought my wife a Nook ereader. I bought last years model, which holds a microSD card for expansion. You would think that is a good idea wouldn't you? Well this years model has no SD slot. Why, so you can't root the unit, which runs on Android, so you can read any file, instead of only Barnes & Noble files. This is to force you to buy media from ONLY them.

Apparently printer manufacturers make biggest bucks from cartridges. Also the older the printer the more expensive the cartridges. It is often cheaper to think about a replacement printer unless you really love it.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Many thanks OtheHill and Derek, comforting to know I'm not on my own in my thinking.
